Helping Without Pay

Does true humanitarianism exist?

*The podcast episode goes into more topics. Have a listen.

It’s my middle sister’s birthday today. She must be 47? We are 3 years apart.

It’s a day off today. We have a bone marrow transplant one year anniversary appointment to see how things are going and the plan moving forward.

Besides all of that I have swirling thoughts this morning. No theme, yet. But I will find one. Just swirling thoughts...

Thoughts about the kind of content I enjoy listening to and what I would potentially like to create. I really enjoy this gal on Instagram who is what I call a positive affirmation talker. She is all about telling her listener about how amazing they are. Of course she doesn’t know the listener. So, on some level it really isn’t necessarily true. But I think what it is, is the belief in said listener that they are amazing but maybe they are in self-doubt. She is trying to give that listener the confidence boost that we all need from time to time.

The other thing she does is a wake up your body routine with an emphasis on getting a good lymphatic drain for detoxification. How many of us just get up. Drink coffee. Sit on the couch. Get dressed. Go to work. That is all. We don’t even consider doing a lymphatic drain. Unless you are part of the 5 am work out club.

She is not the only person that does affirmation speeches or lymphatic drains. So, her content is not really original nor is a copycat. But I think we can feel someone’s energy and her is a pure helpful energy.

Of course, like all influencers or influencer wanna be’s, they do want to make money. She has created some courses that cost money. It isn’t all humanitarian work. Why else would they pour their heart and soul into it. Time is money. They could be spending it at a job that would ultimately pay for their dwellings and cell phones.

To do something for free exists but it is rare. To do something for free reminds me of that starving artist mentality or even dare I say starving writer mentality. You hope one day what you create will be purchased.

To lend a helping hand without expectation of anything in return is rare these days. Name one person who does humanitarian work for free who is not wealthy and has all of their needs taken care of...I am curious, listening. I am talking about actual help like counseling, building things, taking care of animals -- all for extended periods of time. I am all ears.

We all have needs. We need medical insurance, car insurance, cell phones, cable, food, clothes, entertainment, our utilities paid for. The list goes on. How is this going to be covered? I can’t blame this seemingly humanitarian person for wanting to pay for her mortgage or rent.

It gets me thinking about what we are willing to reach into our billfolds for. Think about personal trainers. Are you willing to take the advice of someone who gone through training to help someone reach their fitness goals? Or does that seem too expensive? I think people hit a wall and realize they can’t do something on their own. Whether it is taking a pill, seeking guidance, or enrolling in a program...this is not the knee jerk response. We try on our own. We try and we try with unsuccessful results. Then we pay. With health and wellness, the quote “pay the farmer now, or pay the doctor later” ...unknown author?

We begin to see the value in someone who says it a different way or shows us a different way. Perhaps we pay for that social connection and not just the words of advice. Do you not think a personal trainer becomes on some level a friend or confidant? They probably would. Just like a physical therapist becomes your champion or cheerleader. The money makes it so. Does it taint it? I don’t think it does. I just think it makes it possible. But I still wished for natural and free guidance. Something genuine, of a pure heart. But I think I am wishing for something that doesn’t exist.

Maybe these are silly thoughts and that is ok. The beauty of typing is that it taps into your unconscious thoughts without edit. I think more people should dip into them. I always feel a wave of calm after typing. It soothes my soul. Much like how I would feel this strong feeling of joy when I would set out my free plants after my plant sales for the passerby. After I would watch to see the excitement in folks that saw free plants. True humanitarian work actually does fill the soul with a feeling that is unmatched.

So, I go back and forth on whether or not I want to create paid for private uplifting content. If someone pays for it, they truly value it. They are willing to dip into their billfold and spend their hard-earned money on it. They perhaps have hit a wall doing it on their own. They have tried to pull themselves up from their bootstraps and have admitted it is just too fucking hard to do it on their own. They need that sultry raspy morning voice to do it for them. That is kind of an exciting feeling from my perspective.

That is all,

Love, Alimoon
